Green Web Hosting Part 2

ME Webhost mewebhost.com

Hey Man,

From my previous post, we talked about an initiative to transform a million websites from regular webhosting to green webhosting. That’s a noble goal. They have their work cut for them. The GreenPowerInside approach is to certify webhosting companies that use renewable energy.

Today we talk about one such green webhosting company. The company is Greenest Host. How are they doing it?

Each server we operate (as opposed to a server operated and cooled in a regular power-grid- connected data center) saves more than 2000 kWh annually of “dirty” electricity consumption - that’s the environment equivalent of saving 107 gallons of gasoline from being burned into the atmosphere each year and for every 5 servers we host, it’s like taking the pollution of one passenger car off the road for a year.

I just wanted to note that, conserving our natural resources, and protecting the Earth for future generations is a noble goal. I am all for it. Each of the “green” post posted on this website is done because I do care about the environment, and I do care that we leave this Earth in a better shape than when we first inherited it. Go Green!!!

What is Green Hosting?

It’s not the computer on our desktops that uses the most energy. It’s the datacenters that power our servers, switches, and routers that consumes the most energy. Going green means using renewable energy sources to power our datacenters. We want to conserve the energy we generate. We want to use that renewal energy as efficiently as possible. We are not talking about renewal energy credits. They don’t count.

There is an environmental initiative called . There goal is to convert 1 million websites out of 40 million newly created websites to using green power. What does this conversion buy us?

We reduce annual pollution which is equal to

  • 2,000 passenger cars taken off the road
  • 1,070,000 gallons of gasoline not burned
  • 21,900 barrels of oil not burned
  • 1,200 households not using electricity for a year
  • 240,000 tree seedlings grown for 10 years
  • 7,900 acres of pine forests storing carbon for one year
  • 77 acres of forest preserved from deforestation
  • 48 railcars of coal not burned
  • 3,200 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled

Go Green!! In the days to come, I will be introducing and reviewing various green webhosting companies. We only have one Earth. Let’s take care of it.

P.S. Thank you Sandra for introducing , and

Help conserve resources. Help conserve energy. Think Green!!! Did you know that with a black screen instead of white screen, we can save electricity? According to a ecoIron with a black screen we use 59 watts, versus a white screen which uses 74 watts. This comes to 750 MegaWatts-Hours a year.

So go green. Help the environment, and conserve our energy resources. Check out Blackle, it Google with a Black Screen - aka “Green Google.”
