Why is green hosting good for your health? The obvious answer is the electricity generated is from renewal resources. However, most people don’t realize that the standard method of producing electricity is extremely polluting. In fact, electricity production is the leading cause of industrial pollution in the United States. Air pollution exhibit itself in the form of soot, smog, acid rain, mercury, and CO2 (causes green house effect).

To under why this is the case we need to study the traditional method of producing electricity.

1) Steam Power Plant - powered by coal, petroleum, or biomass. The fuels are burned to create steam which spins turbines to create electricity.

2) Gas Turbine Plant - Fuels are burned to create hot gases which spins the turbines

3) Nuclear Plant - Powered by Nuclear Fuel. Nuclear reactions are created to heat water, which turns into steam, which spins a turbine that creates electricity

4) Hydroelectric Turbine - Flowing water from a waterfall spins a turbine.

Steam Power, and gas turbine plants use fossil fuels which are extremely polluting. Nuclear plant is obvious. The waste is radioactive. Hydroelectric turbine pollutes the waterfall or river with the heat, and waste it generates.

Pollution from electricity generates

• 60% of nation’s sulfur dioxide - causes acid rain
• 20% of nation’s nitrogen oxide - creates smog, and a ground level ozone
• CO2 gases - greenhouse effect
• Nuclear energy - radioactive waste
• Mercury - extremely poisonous.
